I want to grow my own tea… Help!

The Chef and I are slowly and steadily trying to widdle down processed foods. Yes, we know that there are major health benefits, and I’m not going to go into all of that now, but honestly, I want to do it because 1. I like trying to make as much homemade stuff as I can, probably because I’m a “bored” homemaker (mucho sarcasm on the bored bit…), and 2. I feel like if done correctly, it can save a buck or two, while also saving on artificial preservatives.

I am not looking for any type of a debate people. This is just something we find enjoyable. We like to eat as healthy as we can, while also enjoying the deliciousness of some fattening foods.

One of our “New Years Resolution’s” (if we even want to call it that because I feel like once you put a label on it… it gets complicated…)

One of our “idea’s” that lightbulbed around January 1st was: if we craved a certain food item, we tried to make it ourselves. If we were motivated enough, we would make it. If not, then clearly we didn’t want it badly enough.

Now, we haven’t gone to the crazy point of never buying any indulgence. It has most definitely happened. But, I can tell you that it has decreased how much we have spent on eating out, aaand we have found some wicked awesome ideas.

Pizza that is to die for. (That post is coming soon, peeps)
Sushi that taste just like how the “professionals” (I use that term lightly) make it.
DONUTS (at 11pm)

The list goes on and on.

I mean, read the blog…

So my next venture is trying to grow my own tea plant. I drink tea daily. I feel like I could live in the UK.(This could be because I have an aunt straight out of the England, who I seriously want to be just like.. Shout out to Auntie Alison!) 🙂 My tea time is in the morning and around 3 or 4 pm.

I. Love. Tea. It soothes my soul.

Now, I live in midwestern Michigan, I know the Camellia sinensis var. sinensis grows in warmer climate (aka china), but I seriously am wanting to try this.

Are there any tea people out there that would be willing to help this “bored” homemaker make her dreams come true?? Am I absolutely crazy??

This is just a random thought I had as I was plotting out our garden with The Chef today… Please no laughter.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

All hecklers will be scorned.

  1. This is your cousin, Kyle. From Illinois! Contact me for some more information about how to grow tea. I actually am working on propagation of chamomile and lavender. So we should talk. Email Me.
